Day Nine - May 31, 2024


 

I started the day with trying to address some of the problems I had hit yesterday. I wrote a big list, so I could 

keep track of them. I had some stuff that needed preservation, mostly a large poster that had been kept rolled 

up and a photograph that had been glued into a frame. Not on purpose, it seems like the frame was poorly 

made, so someone used glue to keep it together, but the glue spilled out on the actual photograph. I hadn’t 

even noticed when the preservation guys were in. When I brought it up to Sam, he said he could take it over 

to preservation during the lunch break. Which I’m thankful for because I wasn’t sure how I’d be able to 

without a car. 

I’ve also realized, two of the series I had initially planned were really too small for optimal containment. 

It was technically a lot of stuff but basically two big stacks of paper so they didn’t really take up a huge 

amount of space. I talked to Sam about it and he basically said that combining series from the processing 

plan happens all the time. I had to spend a lot of the remaining time before lunch, re-writing the files again. 

Changing the series and box numbers that sorta thing. I guess that’s why people usually start from the top. 

Once we got back from lunch, I was ready to start with the scrapbook. I wasn’t sure if I should replace all 

the pages or just put the whole thing into an archive box but the binder didn’t fit into one anyway. After 

talking it over with the supervisors, Perri and eMott, they said I should take the actual paper pages out of the 

plastic sheet protectors and put them in the original order with protective paper sheets between each one. 

We couldn’t use the full page protective sheets because the paper the scrapbook was made with is slightly 

too big. I was fine with this plan though, because the scrapbook in order is really the most important part. 

I probably went through at least a hundred sheets of that special dividing paper. 

I tried to get as much as I could into one file but there was just so much, so I had to divide it between two. 

I made sure to keep them in order inside the actual box. Overall I had a pretty productive day, I think I’ll 

probably be able to start on the finding aid soon. I’m still not sure about the published material. I’ve 

asked a few different people about it now but a lot of the answers I’ve gotten back have been kind of vague.

The Phil Johnson collect ion as donated before I surveyed the material. There's a variety of material including books, DVD s, writing and artifacts.        This was the first day of my internship with the special collections department at the University of North Texas. I’m working alongside seven other students processing materials for the university archives. I was assigned to the Philip Johnson collection; a collection of personal items, paperwork, and writing done by gay activist Philip Johnson. Johnson advocated for gay rights, and contributed a huge amount of materials to UNT’s LGBT resource Center. He, unfortunately, passed away in 2019 but I’m really excited to work with the materials provided by his estate. Day Three - May 22, 2024

       Today, we had a lecture on making a processing plan for the first hour of the morning. It was very informative and our supervisors, Sam and Meagan, made sure to put a template for a processing plan and some example plans in the  team's account. I Spent most of the day working on surveying. I looked through the rest of Phil’s scrapbook. I learned  some interesting stuff about his life, career and activism. I was considering it before but now I’m definitely sure it  should be the main part of the collection. The book had a lot of interesting photos and some really interesting writing  about his early life. I kind of wish he had written more about his life. I think he did contribute to a few different  newspapers so maybe more of his personal stories are written down in the world.  I think I’m getting a better idea of the function of this collection now. Day Thirteen - June 6, 2024

  Today the morning was taken up entirely by an introductory presentation to ArchivesSpace.  The website used by UNT to manage the metadata and online database for their archival collections. We  won’t be able to actually input anything into ArchivesSpace yet because the person in charge of that is on  vacation until next week.  The actual website looked a bit like some of the programs I’ve used while freelancing. I’ve done a bit of  data-entry and research jobs for a local newspaper, but of course the focus of the two sites requires some  different features. I appreciated how in depth the presenter went. Especially where we could access tutorials  on how to use the site's different features, even if the videos were in their words “Too long and boring”.  I tend to be more of a visual learner, so having some extra instructions should be helpful in the future.
