Day Ten - June 3, 2024
The first half of the class was spent on a lecture by our supervisor eMott and a librarian staff member, Ely,
about public services in archives. They went over a few of their past programs, some successful and less
successful. They told us a story about how they tried public out-reach at a tailgating event for a UNT game.
They spent the whole time shouting over the crowd noise to intoxicated people. Even if the trip had been
successful, it’s a really funny story. Their presentation made me want to go to some of the other library
events. They had a few past and future events focused around zine printing and collecting. When this
practicum is over I’ll only be an hour away so maybe I will be able to. The presentation went long so I
didn’t get a real start on work until after lunch.
After lunch I started working on some descriptions for the series, boxes, and descriptions. I’m still uncertain
about the amount of published material. I know the supervisors want us to try and keep as much material as
possible but I’m not sure how relevant it is to the collection. Most of the box is popular movies, I feel like
they probably have copies of it in the library but there is a mix of home movies. Although I don’t know
what’s actually on them, since there was no description provided.
eMott also told us about a new opportunity for our collection. To make displays based on them to be held in
the main special collection lobby. The displays can be focused on anything in our actual collection, and
we’ll each have two shelves to set it up. I don’t know that I’ll need two shelves but I like the idea. There’s a
lot of interesting stuff in the collection that I think will make for a nice display.
